Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada is said to be based on the famous Lucknow courtesan. Umrao Jaan was played by stunning Rekha and it's her style of acting and personality which makes her so perfect for the role. The films rest on Rekha's credentials and she does full justice to the script portraying every mood of her character convincingly.

Plot of Umrao Jaan:

The film is set in mid-nineteenth century northern India among the elite Muslim society.

It depicts the story of a tawaif, a kind of courtesan who is trained to entertain wealthy people. In the film, Umrao Jaan is kidnapped by her neighbor and sold at a very young age to a brothel owned by Madam Khanum Jaan (Shaukat Kaifi) where she trains her courtesans (tawaif).

As Umrao Jaan grows, she is given training to entertain, read, write, dance, sing, and charm wealthy men. She grows up to become one of the most beautiful and attractive tawaifs of her court but she is no common prostitute. She charms men of wealth and good taste with her singing, dance and poetry.

With her charming coquetry and poetry combined with her beauty, she attracts the attention of Nawab Sultan played by Farooq Shaikh. The two of them fall in love but the Nawab cannot marry her and has to marry someone else which breaks Umrao's heart. After that incident, she is never happy and wants to go far from the world of tawaif and she looks for measures that will bring her freedom from the world of brothel.

She meets a bandit chieftain, Faiz Ali (Raj Babbar), who flatters and wins her and decide to flee with the dacoit, hoping to marry him and leave the world of the courtesan. But things take a turn where she is left with no option other than to go back to her old life. However after each attempt at escape she finds herself right back at the place from where she started. The film ends tragically with Umrao left alone to lead a life of loneliness and disrespect.
