Safar |
Safar was directed by Asit Sen and was released in the year 1970. The music of Safar was composed by the famous Kalyanji-Anandji. A superhit film of the year, it deals with the challenges and compromises in the life of ordinary people. Safar is a non-melodramatic fare which is very refreshing. The characters get a few emotional luxuries like a murmur of protest or an escaped sob in their inexplicable journey of life, the Safar. It also emphasizes on the requirement of coping instead of moping.
Safar is narrated from the point of view of an aging Neela. Neela(Sharmila Tagore) is a upcoming doctor who lives with her brother. Avinash(Rajesh Khanna) is their neighbor and a painter and poet by profession. However, Neela does not known that he suffers from cancer. He is shown as a very humane character who wants to live life only for Neela. On the other hand, Neela is also fighting - fighting to survive economically. She teaches Montu, the younger brother of a stockbroker. However, she scolds Montu for reading pornography and is thrown out of the house by Montu's mother.
The story of Safar takes a turn from here. The stockbroker, Sekhar(Firoz Khan) brings Neela home not as a tutor but as his wife. However Neela cannot forger Avinash who compels her to marry Sekhar. Life takes a turn for Neela as Sekhar is not happy of the fact that she visits Avinash. Jealousy creeps in within Sekhar. During this time, Avinash fails badly in the share market and commits suicide. He makes Neela give him a drink laced with potassium cyanide.
Neela is taken to the court where her mother in law testifies in her favor and she is released. She returns back as a doctor but has no emotional attachments towards Avinash or her family members. She has dedicated her life for serving mankind. In the end Avinash dies unattended by Neela.
Rajesh Khanna beautifully portrays his character, Avinash in Safar. He has shown the desperation and conviction that surviving by a thread is not really living with maturity and ease. Due to his acting skills, this film has been ranked among the top bollywood tragic movies. Sharmila Tagore, on the other hand, is a study in stoicism. There are some scenes in which she had superbly played her character but there are certain scenes in which performance could have been better.
Feroz Khan is shown here in an author-backed role who portrays the simmering jealousy with ease. The potassium cyanide that he consumes to kill himself is like an manifestation of the suspicion that he is consumed by. Safar would have featured higher on the list of all-time classics if motivations for Sharmila's character were not left over.
Safar had a great impact on the acting careers of Firoz Khan and Rajesh Khanna. It helped Firoz Khan to win a firm foothold in the film industry. His flambouyant acting in Safar helped him to win a role in Admi Aur Insaan, another popular film of the era. After his superb performance as a dying man in Safar, Rajesh Khanna played the role of a cancer patient in Anand, which is another memorable film.
