Bollywood tragic movies have been extremely popular with the masses and one among these is Anand. Written and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Anand was released in the year 1970 and has gained commercial success. Other than this, it has also been critically acclaimed. The movie is also known to be the best by Rajesh Khanna.
The main characters of Anand includes Anand Saigal played by Rajesh Khanna, Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee played by Amitabh Bachchan, Renu played by Sumita Sanyal, Renu's mother played by Durga Khote, Isa Bhai (also called Murarilal) played by Johnny Walker, Dr Kulkarni played by Ramesh Deo and Matron played by Lalita Pawar.

Other than these, Yogesh has also written a song for this movie- Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye and Zindagi kaisi hai paheli.
The story of Anand is quiet heart rendering. It is the story of two friends, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Rajesh Khanna(Anand) is a person suffering with cancer and Amithabh Bachchan (Bhaskar) is his doctor. Bhaskar is surprised to see the zest for life in Anand. Anand is such a character who fills the minds of people around him with his heartfelt smiles. He is full of life and never lets others realize his illness.
However, somewhere inside, Anand is a lonely person. He is well aware of his fate and thus tries to live every moment fully. Though inevitable death is main theme of the film, the director and the actors have breathed life into this morbid subject with their excellent performances and great songs.
The character of Anand is said to have been inspired by Raj Kapoor. He used to call Hrishikesh Mukherjee "Babu Moshay". The film is also dedicated to Raj Kapoor as well as the people of Bombay. Later on Anand was remade in Malayalam and was known as Chitrashalabham (butterfly) starring Jayaram and Biju Menon.
Anand has also won various Filmfare awards which includes Filmfare Best Actor Award(Rajesh Khanna), Filmfare Best Dialogue Award (Gulzar), Filmfare Best Editing Award (Hrishikesh Mukherjee), Filmfare Best Movie Award (Hrishikesh Mukherjee, N.C.
