Paap

Paap is a Bollywood film, which was released in the year 2004. The film has been directed by Pooja Bhatt and was her debut film as a director. Paap is a proof of the fact that Pooja Bhatt had inherited all the traits of a good director from her father, Mahesh Bhatt. The script of the film has been written by Mahesh Bhatt. Critics have said that this film is visually stunning, engrossing, and thematically moving.

In the film, Paap, John Abraham, Udita Goswami, Gulshan Grover and Mohan Agase play the major characters. John has played the role of Shiven, a police officer and Udita has played the role of Kaya. She is the female lead actor in the movie.

The story of Paap is quite interesting and the film has Himachal Pradesh as its background. Kaaya is a quiet and reserved girl who intends to join a monastery as ordered by her father. In the meanwhile, a monastery in Sphiti has given her an important task. She is asked to go to Delhi and take care of a six-year-old boy, Llhamo. The small boy is considered to be the reincarnation of a Buddhist teacher. She is also asked to bring him back to Sphiti.

The story of Paap takes a turn from here. Llhamo becomes a key witness to the murder of a police officer. Shiven, who is an honest police officer and does not believe in superstitions and reincarnation, handles the case. When Kaaya tells him about the reincarnation theory and about Llhamo, he is surprised. The quarrel over the issue and deep inside Kaaya starts believing what Shiven tells her. Meanwhile she is also attracted to Shiven.

Later on, Shiven helps Kaya and Llhamo to reach Sphiti. In doing this, he is hurt and the elderly men of the village ask him to stay back until he gets well. This increases the intimacy between Kaaya and Shiven to the dislike of Kaaya's father. The film ends with Shiven catching the murderers and Kaaya realizing that suppressing desires is not life.

Paap became the first Bollywood movie to be shown at the Kara Film Festival in Karachi. The offbeat story and the refreshing way of dealing the story had made this film popular among the masses. Pooja Bhatt has tackled the theme of the story like a mature director. She goes inside the life of a girl who is torn between desires and conservative values. She does not introduce mushy sentiments here.

John Abraham handles the character of Shiven in a mature way and amazing ease and conviction. Dr. Mohan Agashe as Kaya's father in Paap is also superb. He says a thousand words without any expression on his face. Debutante Udita Goswami also surprises the viewers with her polished performance. She conveys the inner dilemmas of her character with excellent ease. The expressions are punctuated with restraint and outbursts.
